Holy Monday

Holy Monday is traditionally regarded as the day Jesus cleared the Temple of the money changers and merchants. Why was Jesus upset (righteous anger & judgment), and what example was he giving?

Restoring Purpose: Jesus was restoring the Temple as a house of prayer for all nations and clearing out business activities.

Opposing Exploitation: The merchants and money changers were charging excessive fees to pilgrims (corrupting worship), turning worship into a profit-driven enterprise (driven by greed).

Authority Assertion: As the Son of God, Jesus was asserting His authority over the Temple, acting as its true purifier.

Protecting the Gentiles: The commerce took place in the Court of the Gentiles, which was the only area designated for non-Jews to worship.

This makes me think about the overarching concept of the desecration of holy places and the hurdles people trying to become closer to Christ sometimes face. We must care about the holiness of worship without turning our traditions, preferences, or systems into obstacles to the very people Christ calls.

Why do we relegate the church to a building? When the scope and focus is small, things become legalistic "trying not to do it wrong". Turn around and look in the other direction. How can we incorporate God's plan into daily life. How can we love our neighbors in ways that display Christ and point them to the salvation found in Him alone?
