Missions Moment Spotlight - Lott Cary (February 18, 2024)

Lott Cary was a former slave who pioneered mission work in Africa spending eight years in the mission field. The Baptist mission board paired Cary with the American Colonization Society which led to many obstacles to his ability to spread the Gospel to the people of Africa. He arrived in Sierra Leone but was soon relocated to Liberia by the Colonization Society. In Liberia, he spent much of his time serving the sick and even planted a church in Monrovia. Perhaps his most significant missionary work was to encourage other Americans, both African Americans and Caucasian Americans, to participate in missions to Africa. He set up the Monrovia Mission Society to raise funds for these missions. His direct impact was limited to only eight years, but the long-term effects of his work were great, still spanning several generations. In his honor, the African American Baptists established the Lott Cary Foreign Mission Convention in several countries in Africa after Cary’s death.
